Assignment 2 Cell Phones

Cell Phones
Cellular phones, or cell phones as they are more commonly called, have become the telephone standard in our society. Landline phones have all but disappeared, except for businesses. Ninety two percent of American adults own cell phones, and that number is only going to rise as the generations of people that have only known a world with cell phones become out live those who knew the world before cell phones.
Cell phones work by using ultra high frequency cell phone towers that provide service to regions around them called cells, hence the name. The signals produced by the towers are picked up in the cell phone, and is handed off between towers when the cell phones moves out of reach of one. As the cell phone technology has increased through the years, the features that were introduced to newer phones needed space on the frequency spectrum, so modern cell phone antennas now cover from 300 - 399 MHz. This range covers services such as analog calls, caller ID, text messaging, and digital internet. The addition of these features has lead to cell phones being considered the ultimate convergence device, that has the high definition streaming capacity to rival cable and satellite television.
This incredible technology has had an incredible effect on people who are used to them. Dong Liu examined the various forms of communication possible using cell phones and has shown that each form hold a different social context and is used to differentiate and establish the closeness of a relationship. Forms of communication in which more emotion is able to be shared such as phone calls and video chats are used more with those who have a closer relationship, while text messaging and emails are more used with those who aren't considered close.
Cell phones have had a tremendous impact on society, becoming arguably the best convergent device. As time goes on and technology advances, cell phones will be consistently on the forefront of development.
